Interview Instructions

These simple instructions will help you perform your own Mentor interview.

Choose someone to interview.
Find an individual that does what you want to do.

Learn all you can about this person.
Without actually contacting this person, try to find out everything you can about them, their profession, and the company or organization they work for.

Write down 5 - 10 questions to ask in the interview. See examples below:
  • Tell us about your background, where you were born, what life growing up was like, where you went to school, etc.
  • What have you achieved in your professional life? Share some of your career highlights.
  • How did you get started and what did you do to set yourself apart from others pursuing your same professional goals? Please share details on the process/pattern you followed to get to where you did in your career.
  • What habits, guiding principles, or goals have made you successful?
  • What advice would you give aspiring professionals from all over the world that are in a similar position to what you experienced when you first started?

Determine how you will record the interview.
The ideal would be to perform the interview in person, but if this is not possible you can perform the interview over the phone. You should record the interview with a tape or digital recorder. If you perform the interview over the phone, make sure you use a speaker phone so you can record it. The other option is to simply take hand-written notes, but this is not recommended.

Contact the individual and setup an interview time.
Explain that you are performing this interview for IMNO. Explain what IMNO is. This part is very important. You might only have one chance. Don't miss it. At the end of the interview ask the person if they want to be notified via email when a community member posts a question to their interview. Also ask the person for a picture you can post next to the interview.

Be professional and be grateful.
Dress well and treat the person with respect. Don't ask them for a job. Remember, you represent a worldwide community of aspiring professioanls. You don't want to give the community a bad reputation.

Transcribe and submit your interview.
Type-up the interview and submit it to the IMNO website so that the rest of the world can learn from your interview.
